ANTI-POVERTY WEEK 16-22 October 2011
More than 400 activities will be held around Australia as part of Anti-Poverty Week 2011. About 1,000 organisations and more than 20,000 people will participate.
Activities and events
Activities during the Week will include launches, forums, workshops, awards, exhibitions, fund-raisers, publications, presentations, surveys, addresses, festivals and many other activities focussing on different aspects of poverty and hardship at home and abroad.
Venues include shopping centres, parks, cathedrals, community centres, libraries, stadiums, hotels, health centres, welfare agencies, business offices, town halls, parliaments, galleries, universities, schools, car parks, squares and markets.
Themes and participants
Key themes include links between poverty and education, health, work, finance, housing, food and utilities. Other issues include Indigenous poverty, homeless people, poverty and children, poverty and older people, poverty and people with disabilities, rural poverty and many others.
Participants include major national organisations like ACOSS, ACTU, Anglicare, Australian Red Cross, Australian Services Union, Big Issue, Catholic Social Services of Australia, Committee for Economic Development of Australia, Jobs Australia, Mission Australia, Salvation Army, Smith Family, St Vincent de Paul, The Benevolent Society, UnitingCare and Uniting Voice.
Other participants include religious groups, educational institutions, welfare agencies, community groups, businesses, unions, government departments and local councils.
